About MOTOROLA MOBILITY

In 2011, the original Motorola was split into two publicly traded companies. Motorola Solutions took over the enterprise-oriented business units, while Motorola Mobility assumed the mostly consumer-facing divisions, including the mobile phone business, cable modems, and pay television set-top boxes.

Motorola Mobility originally consisted of two main areas: the mobile devices business, which produced smartphones and accessories such as Bluetooth headsets, and the home business, which produced set-top boxes, end-to-end video solutions, cordless phones, and cable modems.

In May 2012, Google acquired Motorola Mobility, primarily to obtain its patent portfolio and protect other Android vendors from litigation. Soon after the purchase, Google sold the cable modem and set-top box business to Arris Group, while Motorola Mobility’s product focus shifted increasingly toward entry-level smartphones. Under Google’s ATAP division, the company also began developing Project Ara.

In 2014, Google sold Motorola Mobility to the Chinese technology company Lenovo for $2.91 billion. The sale excluded ATAP and most of the patents.
